How to measure a room for a furniture layout

A useful plan starts with the clear space inside the room. Record centimetres consistently and keep a note of anything the planner cannot model.

Measure the inside rectangle

Measure between finished wall faces at floor level for width and depth. Take another measurement near the opposite ends; if they differ, keep both measurements in your notes. The editor models a rectangle, so an irregular room needs a conservative planning rectangle and separate site notes.

Record the openings

For each door or window, record its width, height and distance from the start of its host wall to the opening centre. In the editor, north and south offsets run west to east; east and west offsets run north to south. For a window, record sill height above the finished floor. Include the direction a hinged door swings.

Measure the pieces, too

Use overall furniture dimensions, including arms, handles or projections that matter for fit. Measure the floor footprint and height separately. Select a piece in the object list to edit those values without dragging. Decimal point and comma are accepted in number fields; numeric edits are kept to 0.1 cm.

Keep a separate constraint note

Record ceiling variations, slopes, uneven walls, services and protrusions. The outer walls and ceiling in this planner are fixed at 12 cm and 250 cm. Use layout warnings as prompts to inspect the arrangement, then check actual walking space, door operation and delivery access on site.
